Here are the top stories in Long Beach today:

  1. Millikan Shooting Update: L.A. County District Attorney George Gascon charged the former LBUSD safety officer, who allegedly shot and killed an 18-year-old woman, with murder. PD officers arrested the man on Wednesday. The arraignment will take place today, Friday. (Patch)
  2. Carson Stench Update: L.A. County officials hosted a virtual town hall on Wednesday to update exasperated residents on the Dominguez Channel stench. While in the past they pointed to decaying organic matter that needed treatment with deodorizers, a new insight emerged. Now, officials are “looking into the possibility chemicals from local refineries, chemical plants and other facilities might be partially to blame. This comes after a 4.3 magnitude earthquake near Carson last month that may have disrupted the lines.” (CBS)
  3. Long Beach has a new holiday! The city council voted to make the first Tuesday in November a holiday. Traditionally, this is Election Day. The holiday will be observed even if there is no election that year. City Hall and related offices will be closed, and there won’t be street sweeping. (LB Post)
  4. Rancho Los Alamitos at 6400 East Bixby Hill Road is an historic site that is also a LB landmark. Its foundation is the recipient of California Humanities’ $5,000 Humanities for All Quick Grant. Its series called “Women’s Stories from the Gathering Place” caught the attention of the organization. (Rancho Los Alamitos)
  5. There was a murder Tuesday evening. The PD responded to reports of gunshots around 14th Street and Cedar Avenue. While heading there, another report came in of a man shot on the 200 block of West 15th Street. A bicyclist and his assailant got into an argument that escalated in the shooting. The assailant fled the scene in a “newer sedan, which was last seen fleeing northbound on Pacific Avenue from 15th Street.” Officers believe this is a gang shooting, and urge witnesses to contact Homicide Detectives Ethan Shear or Jose Rodriguez at (562) 570-7244.
