The quickest way to get caught up on the most important things happening today in Long Beach.

Morning, neighbors; today is National Recognition Day for Nurses, which the United States Congress designated in 1982! It's me again, Sylvia, your host of the Long Beach Daily.

A naked man got into a fight with seven others in front of a liquor store around eight in the morning. Also, rapper Iggy Azalea and singer-songwriter Natalia Jiménez will headline the Pride Festival. Finally, don’t park in front of a fire hydrant.

Here are the top five stories today in Long Beach:

  1. Did bystanders prevent a rape on Wednesday morning at 8:53 a.m.? Witnesses say a naked man “tried to rape a woman outside a Cherry Avenue liquor store.” A video released on social media shows “at least seven people fighting the naked man in an attempt to get him off of an individual who was lying on their back across a sidewalk.” The LBPD is now investigating. The man is being held for a mental evaluation, but he had to stop by the hospital first “to be treated for his injuries.” (LB Post)
  2. We learned Thursday that this year’s Long Beach Pride Festival’s headliners will be rapper Iggy Azalea and singer-songwriter Natalia Jiménez. The three-day celebration is planned for July 8 to 10. “This year’s Long Beach Pride will be our biggest, and will become the gold standard for Pride festivals across the globe,” the president of Long Beach Pride said. (Press-Telegram)
  3. The LBFD would like to remind you of the “importance of keeping the area in front of a fire hydrant clear of any vehicles.” A recent need for accessing a hydrant was almost thwarted by a car parked in front of it. However, as the Thursday photo shows, firefighters got creative. (LBFD)
  4. The city announced Wednesday that it is looking for election workers. With June 7 right around the corner, you are encouraged to apply today! (Long Beach City)
  5. Mark your calendars! There will be a fundraiser supporting Ukraine at Compound Long Beach. “The fundraising event, created in partnership with Chromasonic, features an immersive light and sound sequence experience inspired by the Ukrainian flag.” The Compound is at 1395 Coronado Avenue, but parking is at 1326 Obispo Avenue. The event goes from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. and features “DJ Olive Kimoto, appetizers and sweets from beloved local eatery Wide Eyes Open Palms, beer and wine by Compound, and the opportunity to hear directly from Chromasonic and WCK.” (Random Lengths News)
