🦃 Thanksgiving Poll!
Thanksgiving is on November 24th. How do you celebrate? So far, 46.7% celebrate a big meal as a family tradition, while 30% don’t celebrate and treat it like any other day. In a smaller group, 1.7% don’t celebrate because they feel it glorifies the conquest of Native Americans; however, 21.7% choose to celebrate a traditional Thanksgiving out of gratitude.

📰 Here are the top stories today in Long Beach:

1) Long Beach is getting a new boutique hotel! A Thursday update shows that the 2010 East Ocean Boulevard project will combine a 40-room hotel with 56 townhomes. The units will be “arranged around a central courtyard that opens towards the adjoining public green.” (Urbanize LA)

2) Latest election update: The California Secretary of State updated the election count on Thursday afternoon. Rex Richardson has solidified his lead in the race for mayor. The same goes for Kristina Duggan in Council District 3 and Joni Ricks-Oddie in District 9. However, the lead of Megan Kerr in District 5 is still razor-thin, with only 51.8%. (Long Beach Post)

3) The city wants your input on sidewalk vending! The survey opened on Friday and will remain active through December 18. “Survey results will support the development of sidewalk vending regulations consistent with state regulations, including Senate Bill 946 (SB 946) and Senate Bill 972 (SB 972), and will additionally be informed by data, expert opinion, and community input.” (City of Long Beach)

4) In March, the city will likely end its moratorium on disconnecting residential utilities. Officials estimate that there are “over 12,000 business and residential accounts behind on gas, water or trash bills worth about $7.3 million.” We learned on Friday that the Long Beach Water Department is looking for ways to use meters with remote capabilities, to prevent lag in reconnecting utilities or charging a $105 reconnection fee when a technician has to travel to a location. (Long Beach Post)

5) Coco Beach Presents at 2300 East PCH is more than a tapas restaurant. It's also the hub of Our Generation Cares, a “youth incubator” for entrepreneurial-minded youths between 14 and 24 years. Members “are taught kitchen skills from professional cooks, financial literacy from professional accountants, and the power of community through the multiple small businesses they pour their time and passion into.” Organizers believe that young entrepreneurs from low-income communities will be the real difference-makers in the local business community. We learned Thursday that you can support this effort by visiting Coco Beach Presents or attending the fundraiser November 20. (Signal Tribune)
