📰 Here are the top stories today in Long Beach:
- A new fire station is coming to the Virginia Country Club area at 4101 Long Beach Boulevard! On Tuesday, the City Council voted to rebuild Fire Station 9, almost three years after the building housing it at 3917 Long Beach Boulevard was shut down due to mold issues. That said, there’s no word when construction will start, because the City Council still has to allocate “between $13 million and $20 million, excluding the cost of land.” (Long Beach Post)
- The old North Neighborhood Library at 5571 Orange Avenue will be turned into affordable housing. Habitat for Humanity was given the nod to build “eight two-story townhomes that will be sold to low-income, first-time homebuyers.” Construction will likely begin later this year. (City of Long Beach)
- Beachwood Brewing at 210 East 3rd Street will close its kitchen, beginning February 1, and the venue will only operate as a brewery and tasting room. Said the management team, “Downtown Long Beach has been hit with a host of difficult issues that have left the hospitality industry with significantly reduced business.” To make up for closing the kitchen, the brewery plans to host pop-ups, bring in entertainment and, if things change, reopen the kitchen early in the summer. (Beachwood Brewing)
- Let’s Yolk About It, originally known as What’s Crackin, at 4722 Second Street, is getting the celebrity chef treatment. Earlier this week, we learned that the owner is looking to redo the menu and bring in chef Hugo Sanchez, “who has worked on a variety of cooking competition shows including 'Cutthroat Kitchen' and ‘The Next Food Network Star.’” The goal is to get a new menu put together by March 1. Look forward to vegan goodies as well as staples like huevos rancheros. (The HiLo)
- Long Beach Airport got a cuteness overload Wednesday morning! The Guide Dogs of America puppy-raising groups trained their little canines for outings. “Our puppies practiced walking through the terminal and settling and even security exposure.” And they were adorbs! (Guide Dogs of America)
