Here are the top stories today in Long Beach:

  1. The City’s first responders are the least-vaccinated employee demographic. Only 58% of firefighters and 51% of police officers claimed a full vaccination status. Conversely, 40% of police officers and 27% of firefighters preferred not to disclose their vaccination status. It is interesting to note that these figures are on par with LAFD and LAPD officers. (LB Post)
  2. LB colleges have programs in place to help students experiencing homelessness and food insecurity. For example, LBCC has the Helping Homeless Students Fund. CSULB offers the Short-Term Emergency Housing, Bridge Housing, and the Rapid Re-housing programs. Students in need should reach out to case managers and on-campus basic needs offices. (LB Local News)
  3. Railroad engineers at the L.A./LB Ports are suing Pacific Harbor Line citing harassment, race discrimination, a hostile work environment, and retaliation against Black workers. The railroad calls the claims baseless and “lacking in merit.” (My News LA)
  4. Terry Kennedy, the professional skateboarder from LB who also starred in music videos by Snoop Dogg, stands accused of committing first-degree murder in Illinois. (CBS)
  5. Citing his commitment to mandatory vaccines for city employees, Mayor Garcia urges L.A. County to follow suit with county employees. (@RobertGarcia)
