📰 Here are the top stories today in Long Beach:

1) Monday’s news of the Los Angeles City Council scandal sent ripple effects to Long Beach’s upcoming elections. Suzie Price, who is running for L.B. mayor, issued a statement condemning the three participating L.A. City Council members as well as the L.A. Federation of Labor’s president. Rex Richardson removed endorsements by tainted individuals from his website. Mayor Robert Garcia asked for the three involved L.A. City Council members to resign. (Suzie2022, Long Beach Post)

2) The properties at 5000 and 5001 Airport Plaza Drive were sold by WCCP Airport Plaza L.B. LLC. to LB5000, LLC. for $29 million. We learned on Tuesday that “the property is situated on 2.7 acres, which has a 46-year ground lease in place with the city of Long Beach.” (Real Estate Weekly)

3) On Monday, there was a small ceremony at 100 Oceangate in DTLB. The occasion was the unearthing of a time capsule placed there in 1972, when the Oceangate Tower and Plaza were dedicated. Attendees called it “horribly disappointing,” because all that was in there “were scraps of paper relating to the first of the buildings to be erected at the Oceangate complex and its plaza, along with a smattering of photos and pamphlets.” There was also “a tie from the Port of Long Beach to be given to the current executive director,” which attendees called “the most interesting thing in the box. (Long Beach Post)

4) The Long Beach Fire Department released tips on Tuesday, to help residents during Fire Prevention Week. One of the tips urged residents to “use combination smoke & carbon monoxide alarms that interconnect throughout the home.” If the sensors detect smoke or carbon monoxide in one part of the home, all sensors sound the alarm, buying you more time to get to safety. (LBFD)

5) Mark your calendars! The Belmont Shore sidewalk chalk art contest is happening this Saturday! The brainchild of the inimitable Justin Rudd and his Community Action Team, this contest has been running since 2004. However, “officials concerned about the impact of chalk washed into storm drains banned using the sidewalk as a canvas,” and Rudd switched the medium to a 38-inch-by-50-inch piece of white paper. Visit the artists at work on 2nd Street; the winner is announced at 4:15 p.m. “in front of Chase Bank, at Second and Nieto Avenue.” (Press-Telegram)
