Here are the top stories in Long Beach today:
- The LB School Board has voted to fire the school safety officer involved in the Millikan HS shooting. He shot into a car driving away from him, causing the death of the passenger. As the investigation is still ongoing, the Board determined that “this employee violated District policy, and did not meet our expectations.” (LBReport)
- Cambodia Town is losing businesses. Already, La Lune Thmey and KH Market are gone. United Cambodian Community, a local non-profit, notes that 5% of small businesses in the area closed during the pandemic. At the same time, developers are ready to buy up attractive parcels of land as property owners sell. (LB Business Journal)
- Are you an unvaccinated heath care worker at a LB hospital? You may soon find yourself being laid off. MemoricalCare states that more than 98% of its workers got the vaccine. Dignity Health notes that more than 90% of its workers are vaccinated. (LB Post)
- There was a pedestrian death near PCH and Lewis Avenue. The LBPD suggests that he crossed “southbound on Pacific Coast Highway, outside of a crosswalk.” Officials don’t suspect that “speed, impaired driving, and distracted driving” were involved. (LBPD)
- LB is famous for its little lending libraries. In addition to the Red Wagon, there are little libraries springing up in front of residents’ homes. Case in point is the Mariposa de Barrio on Delta Avenue and 32nd Street. Now, residents created a pumpkin patch around it that allows passersby to use it as a photo backdrop for kids and pets. And, yes, it’s free. (The HiLo)
