Here are the top stories today in Long Beach:

  1. Riding the bandwagon of oil abandonment, local officials have been enthusiastic about separating themselves from the oil business that is part of LB’s current economic landscape. The City Manager estimates it could cost the city $150 million to get out from under oil production “in the next couple of decades.” So far, the City has squirreled away $43 million, but it’ll take a lot more to make the 2035 oil abandonment goal. As noted yesterday, Mayor Robert Garcia viewed the report as a glass half full, while the City Manager is considering it closer to being half-empty. (LB News)
  2. There was a marine fire in the LB Harbor. A 40-foot private vessel caught on fire Tuesday. The FD put out the flames in the Alamitos Bay, which prevented adjacent boats from catching on fire. Fire investigators are now looking into the blaze. (LB Local News)
  3. There was a traffic fatality at Cherry Avenue and Bixby Road on Sunday. A Nissan Rogue and Suzuki motorcycle collided, which left the adult male bike rider dead. The car’s driver remained on the scene and cooperated with investigators. Although the PD says that “neither distracted driving nor impaired driving is believed to be a factor in the collision,” they invite witnesses to come forward and talk to Detective Shawn Loughlin or Detective Joseph Johnson of the Long Beach Police Department Collision Investigation Detail at (562) 570-7355. (LBPD)
  4. What’ll it take to get the cargo at the port moving? Following recent reports of cargo containers sitting at the ports rather than being processed, the LB and L.A. ports will now fine shipping companies whose containers sit around. “Containers scheduled to be moved by trucks will be allowed to stay for nine days before fines start accruing. Containers set to move by rail can stay at the ports for three days.” Starting November 1, “ocean carriers will be charged $100 per container, increasing in $100 increments per container per day.” (KTLA)
  5. The downtown business community is slowly rebounding. But it’s a bit of a mixed bag. Retail occupancy is at 95%, which is great. However, rents are low. Right now, it’s $2.61 per square foot. That said, there’s a good chance that more businesses will be coming in with “more than 50,000 square feet of new retail space under construction in Downtown, including 11,000 square feet of space at the renovated Ocean Center Building and 25,000 square feet of new retail as part of the Broadway Block multi-family development.” (LB Business Journal)
