Here are the top stories today in Long Beach:

  1. Update: Remember when the wheelchair-accessible playground at Admiral Kidd Park went up in flames? Partners of Parks, a local nonprofit organization, is now spearheading the effort to raise $1 million to rebuild it. The organization learned that the playground was not under warranty and LB’s insurance deductible would be more than the replacement cost. (LB Post)
  2. Update: The housing density bills SB 9 and 10 saga continues. Although the City Council remained mum during the commenting period, it now wants to put pressure on Governor Gavin Newsom to veto the bills. Mounting criticism of council members has led to movements that urge voters to remove incumbents in 2022. (LBReport)
  3. The LBPD is hosting another Etch and Catch event next week, Saturday from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Remember to register online because participation is limited to 300 cars. The goal is to drive down catalytic converter theft, which is running rampant in LB. (Long Beach Police Department (CA))
  4. StudentCam is an annual video documentary competition sponsored by C-SPAN. Now, news is out that 19 Poly HS students earned awards for their self-produced documentaries! (LBUSD)
  5. REACH (Restorative Engagement to Achieve Collective Health) teams are now trying to pick up where HEART (Homelessness Education and Response Teams) were unable to make much of a dent. They note that some people experiencing homelessness have had bad experiences with outreach teams in the past. (ABC 7)
