SuperLotto Plus Ticket Sold In Long Beach Just Misses Jackpot But Still Wins Big (patch.com) — Long Beach residents might want to check their tickets after a SuperLotto Plus entry sold at a Pine Avenue convenience store won nearly $30,000 by narrowly missing Saturday’s $14 million jackpot. While no one hit all six numbers, the Long Beach winner matched every regular number and only missed the Mega number, helping push the next jackpot to an estimated $15 million.
   

2. Long Beach to hold recycling drive this week to support local food distribution sites (presstelegram.com) — Long Beach is hosting a “New Year, New Use” recycling drive this Friday, Jan. 2, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at El Dorado Nature Center, where parking fees will be waived for participants. Residents can drop off eligible CRV cans and bottles to be recycled, with proceeds supporting Food Finders’ local food distribution sites while also promoting better recycling habits and environmental education.

Long Beach police promotes Commander Norma Carrillo to deputy chief (nbclosangeles.com) — A longtime Long Beach officer, Commander Norma Carrillo, has been promoted to deputy chief of the Long Beach Police Department effective Jan. 10, 2026, overseeing the Support Bureau. Raised in the city and active in local programs, she’s credited with advancing training, constitutional policing, and community-focused initiatives that shape how officers serve Long Beach neighborhoods.
   

4. CHP tries to corral massive street race after hundreds of daredevil drivers reported on freeway (lbpost.com) — CHP officers say they corralled an unusually large street-racing caravan that sped down the 110 Freeway and gathered on the International Gateway Bridge at the edge of downtown Long Beach. More than 21 people were arrested and dozens of vehicles impounded, and the agency is warning racers they face arrest if they return to local freeways.
