Here are the top stories today in Long Beach:

  1. Update: Yesterday, we learned of the teen who was assaulted and robbed on LB Blvd. On Tuesday afternoon, the LBPD released information on the vehicle the alleged assailants were driving. It is a 2005 black Toyota Camry with the CA plate 6 UIN 904. If you have any information, please drop a dime. (LBPD)
  2. If you were driving past the Golden Sails Hotel on the 6200 block of East PCH Tuesday afternoon, you undoubtedly saw a large contingent of law enforcement in the parking lot. A 46-year-old Menifee resident “allegedly expressed a desire to shoot people,” which resulted in a welfare check and subsequent SWAT response. It took five hours of negotiations to coax the suspect out of his room and place him under arrest. “He was held on zero bail and released on his own recognizance today at around 7 a.m.” (LB Post)
  3. On Tuesday evening at around 7 p.m., the LBPD dispatched officers to LB and Greenleaf boulevards “regarding a hit-shooting.” They found a woman with a gunshot wound. Witnesses described three suspects and the hunt was on. They found two suspects, one is a 15-year-old LB boy; the other one is a 17-year-old Paramount teen. “Officers transported the suspects to Juvenile Booking, where they were booked on firearm related charges. The incident is being investigated as gang-related.” (LBPD Blotter)
  4. In early December, we talked about the revolutionary concept behind the incoming bulk and refill grocery store, Ethikli. We learned on Wednesday that the store is up and running, and a hit with shoppers. As the City’s “first package-free grocery store,” you are encouraged to bring your reusable containers or use theirs. And, shopping there means everything you buy has been researched and “there’s no child labor, there’s no forced labor, (and) everyone along the supply chain is paid fair, living wages.” (Spectrum News 1)
  5. Are you looking for a dessert with a new mouthfeel to try? Wut-A-Pickle at 6727 Long Beach Blvd. could be precisely what you’re looking for! We learned Wednesday that the brainchild of Shontay Burks is one of the popular destinations in North LB. There are “over 20 different flavors of pickles.” “Spicy-food lovers gravitate towards the spicy mango and chili sucker flavors, which imitate popular Mexican candies.” (Signal Hill Tribune)
