Pedestrian Dies In Long Beach Hit-And-Run Crash: Police

Police say the crash happened Friday afternoon in the area of Long Beach Boulevard and 68th Street.

LONG BEACH, CA — A woman died Friday after being struck by a driver who fled the crash site but later returned, according to the Long Beach Police Department.

Police say the woman was using a crosswalk at 68th Street and Long Beach Boulevard around 12:16 p.m. when the driver of a Chevrolet Camaro hit her. The person operating the Camaro then drove away from the scene, police said.

The woman was taken by Long Beach Fire Department personnel to a local hospital where she died from her injuries, authorities said. Her name was not released as the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner's Office works to notify her relatives that she died.

The driver of the Camaro returned about 40 minutes after the crash, according to police. He was taken into custody on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter and fleeing the scene after a crash, police said.

He was identified as 65-year-old Los Angeles resident Eric DeWayne Moody, police said, adding that his bail was set at $50,000.

Speed, distracted driving or impiared driving do not appear to have been factors in the crash, police said.
