Police Arrest Suspect In Fatal Shooting Of Homeless Man Near Long Beach Park

Details about what led up to the deadly shooting remain unclear, but police say they've arrested a suspect on suspicion of murder.

LONG BEACH, CA — Police say they've arrested a suspect in connection with the deadly shooting of a homeless man near a Long Beach Park last week.

Billy Zepeda, 49, was arrested on suspicion of murder Tuesday after police accused him of fatally shooting a homeless man near Long Beach's Lincoln Park on Aug. 28. The 49-year-old had a gun when police located him on Tuesday.

Zepeda, who police say is homeless, also faces potential charges of possession of a firearm and being an ex-felon in possession of ammunition, according to the Long Beach Police Department. His bail was set at $2 million, police said.

Zepeda, according to police, approached the victim, shot him and then quickly fled the area. The victim was taken by Long Beach Fire Department personnel to a local hospital, where he died.

Details about what led up to the deadly shooting remain unclear, and the identity of the man killed in the shooting has yet to be revealed.
