📰 Here are the top stories today in Long Beach:
1) There’s a scuttlebutt of a possible oil spill near Alamitos Beach. Witnesses reported Friday afternoon that they saw tar balls on the beach around the 400 block of East Shoreline Drive. The Coast Guard responded but found “no oil or any tar balls along the shoreline, and any oil that was in the water had dissipated.” (Press-Telegram)
2) The LBFD battled a fire Friday in a seven-story building at 4th Street and Atlantic Avenue. They arrived around 11:30 a.m. and saw “thick smoke billowing from the sixth story.” Someone had pulled the fire alarm, which allowed most residents to evacuate. Some were stranded on the seventh floor and needed assistance. Three people had "non-life threatening injuries." (Long Beach Post)
3) If you’re taking the bus, there’s good news and bad news. The good news is that between October 19 and November 3, the City will install eight new bus shelters. The bad news is that there will be temporary bus stop closures for routes 51, 111, 112, 151, 181, 191, and the 192. They are mostly located on Broadway. (Ride LBT)
4) We have some good COVID-19 news! The City only had 248 new cases as of Thursday, which put the daily case rate at 4.7 patients per 100,000 residents. Most importantly, there were no COVID deaths this week! (Press-Telegram)
5) Mark your calendars! The City is planning for its FREE Día de Los Muertos Celebration! It is scheduled for November 5th at the Rainbow Lagoon in DTLB. Festivities run from noon to 10 p.m. Come to Shoreline Drive and enjoy “breathtaking arts and crafts, dance, world-class music and entertainment, and food and beverage offerings.” (City of LB)
