Here are the top stories in Long Beach today:

  1. Update: No too long ago, we talked about the controversy involving CSULB and Puvungna, which is a “historical and culture site” on the campus that is sacred to several SoCal tribal groups. Now, a settlement was reached that involves CSULB recording a Declaration of Restrictive Covenant that goes with the land. It prevents the university and any future owners of the land to develop it. Moreover, it gives the tribal group access for its traditional activities. (OC Breeze)
  2. Council Member Roberto Uranga (7th District) and his wife were accused of animal cruelty last year. When boarding their dogs at a pet hotel, the staff members “were shocked at the dogs’ poor condition and reported the case to Long Beach Animal Care.” One dog died, and the other one was adopted out to another family. The Urangas stated that the dogs were never mistreated, but were elderly. The couple avoided criminal charges after completing an “online course of animal cruelty prevention classes through a program with the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office.” (LB Post)
  3. Are you curious how Long Beach voted in the recent Gavin Newsom recall election? Out of 274,167 registered voters, 106,717 residents cast a vote. Of these, 75,791 opposed the recall and 30,603 were in favor of it. Of those who named a possible replacement for Newsom, 23,694 liked talk radio host Larry Elder. Christian philanthropist Joe Symmon got the fewest votes with 12. (LA Vote, p. 48)
  4. A shout-out to LBPD North Division officers Lopez, Orloff, Garcia, and Hazelwood for seizing a ghost gun and illegal drugs. They discovered these items when making a traffic stop for speeding. As you may know, ghost guns are privately made firearms that someone put together using parts, frames, and other bits. Because these guns don’t have a serial number, they’re impossible to trace. (Long Beach Police Department)
  5. It’s official, the little rumble you felt on Tuesday afternoon was a 3.0 magnitude earthquake. Centered near San Fernando, residents in Anaheim and Long Beach reported feeling the quake. Of course, if you live near a busy road, a 3.0 barely registers. (CBS)
