Here are the top stories today in Long Beach:

  1. Update: The hot potato known as the Queen Mary may be transferred to the Harbor Department. The City currently owns the aging ship that is in desperate need of extensive repairs. Because planners want to develop Pier H, which is the land around the ship, officials believe that the Harbor Commission might be “better positioned to handle the project.” Repair estimates range from $23 million for critical repairs to stay afloat for two years to $285 million for critical repairs to stay viable. In related news, the Queen Mary “Dark Harbor” Halloween event is canceled for 2021. (LB Post, LB Local News)
  2. LB’s latest shooting was Sunday night in the area of Anaheim Street and Pine Avenue. An adult woman was wounded. You may remember that this is the same area where a double shooting killed two men on August 5. (LBReport)
  3. The plan to widen the 710 Freeway is back on the table. The goal is to add two lanes for truck traffic on either side. However, the EPA halted the project because “it didn’t meet federal air quality standards.” Now, there are efforts to “re-engage community members” by “focusing on equity.” “The Metro Board of Directors expects to have a report of feedback and findings from 710 Task Force by April 2022.” (LB Post)
  4. The LBPD is asking for your help to find an at-risk missing person, Davontay Marquise Clark. He is non-verbal. He was last seen in the 600 block of West 3rd Street. If you see him, please call the LBPD Missing Persons Detail at (562) 570-7246 or Police Dispatch at (562) 435-6711. (LBPD)
  5. Farmers & Merchants’ East Long Beach celebrates 100 years of operations. This bank branch is located at Obispo Avenue and Anaheim Street. (LB Business Journal)
