Hey, Long Beach! Let's get you started this Thursday with everything you need to know going on in town today.

Rumor has it that City officials want to reopen the Queen Mary early next year. Also, there was another shooting near Scherer Park. Finally, in spite of vociferous opposition and calls for PD de-funding, the City Council does not intend to cut its budget.

Here are the top stories in Long Beach today:

  1. Update: The Queen Mary will reopen early next year? City officials say this is the goal. However, there is no tangible plan. (LAist)
  2. The latest LB shooting took place on Monday in the 100 block of East Arbor Street, which is near the western end of Scherer Park, where a juvenile was shot on July 30. The shooting took place just after noon and involved a pedestrian firing into an occupied vehicle. (LBReport)
  3. At the City Council meeting, LBPD Chief Robert Luna reported on a 33% increase in shootings and 71% increase in firearms arrests. Community groups including Black Lives Matter LB, LB Immigrants Rights Coalition, and LB Residents Empowered demand a reduction to the funding the PD receives. However, Council Members are not in favor of cutting the PD budget right now. (LB Post)
  4. Vince Neil of Mötley Crüe fame will be the headliner for the 2021 Acura Grand Prix of Long Beach Saturday concert with sponsorship by Acura, ELS and ASM Global. The Fiesta Friday concert has been cancelled for lack of sponsors. (GPLB, CA News Times)
  5. Chittick Field at 1901 Walnut Avenue started as the Hamilton Bowl. However, it was renamed in honor of Brian Chittick, founder of the Kid Baseball Association and tireless advocate for the space’s use as a recreational venue. Now, the City Council voted to name the field’s sports complex after former Council Member Dee Andrews, who was instrumental in securing almost $10 million in funding for the location’s renovation.
