Rain Advisory Issued Due To High Bacteria Levels In Long Beach Waters

LONG BEACH, CA — Following the rain experienced throughout Los Angeles County early Wednesday morning, health officials have issued a bacteria advisory at all beaches — including Long Beach.

After any significant rainfall, increased runoff from storm drain outlets and rivers may cause unhealthy conditions in the ocean water at Long Beach beaches.

"Ocean and bay recreational waters, especially near discharging storm drains, creeks and rivers can be contaminated with bacteria, chemicals, debris, trash, and other public health hazards from city streets and mountain areas after a rain fall," county officials said.

Residents and swimmers were advised to avoid being in the ocean for up to 72 hours after rainfall to avoid illness, especially near flowing storm drains.

The warning was issued until at least Saturday, Jan. 6 at 7 a.m. and could be extended depending on further rainfall.
