Here are the top stories today in Long Beach:

  1. If you love comics but feel guilty for letting your kid read them instead of highbrow literature, fret no more. Mayor Robert Garcia, tweeting from his personal account, credits comics “for helping [me] to learn to read and write English.” Did you know that you can get comics in any language – even in Latin? (@RobertGarcia)
  2. LBPD Explorer Post #295 is recruiting. If you are between 14 and 20 years of age, have at least a 2.0 GPA, and have no felony convictions, you could qualify! Applications are due on Wednesday! (Long Beach Police Department)
  3. Pfizer booster clinics are now open. Space your appointment, so you got your second dose of the Pfizer vaccine “at least six months ago.” Several of the clinics also offer flu shots. (@LongBeachCity)
  4. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers recommends deepening the channels at the LB Port. The goal is for vessels to navigate through the port more efficiently. Crunching the numbers, the experts suggest that it would break down to $5.9 million in costs over 50 years, which would be offset with $21 million generated each year. If you’d like to take a deep dive, there’s a 400-page document that spells it out. (LB Business Journal)
  5. A man was shot in the Zaferia neighborhood near Newport Avenue and PCH. The shooting happened Saturday night. However, the shooter and the victim fled before police arrived. (LB Post)
