📰 Here are the top stories today in Long Beach:

  1. The Long Beach Police Department (LBPD) responded to reports of a shooting in the 1200 block of Chestnut Avenue on Tuesday. Fortunately, the would-be victims were not hit by bullets. Reportedly, they were outside a home around 8 p.m., when a suspect drove past in a dark-colored sedan. He pointed a firearm at the victims, pulled the trigger, but failed to hit anyone. (LBPD)
  2. The LBPD is starting up its neighborhood walk program again. On Tuesday, officers from the North Patrol Division walked the streets in the “College Square, Coolidge Triangle, Longwood, & Starr King Neighborhoods” to connect with residents and build relationships. (Long Beach PD)
  3. Affordable housing is coming to 521 and 527 East 4th Street. The project, named Denali, consists of two 15-story buildings, with a total of 140 one-bedroom units. Three quarters are earmarked for unhoused neighbors. As outlined in Tuesday’s report, groundbreaking will take place in 2025 and completion should be in 2027. (Connect CRE)
  4. Another affordable housing project could come to the 900 block of Linden Avenue. What used to be the First Lutheran School could become a 100-unit, four-story building. It’ll have an on-site manager’s apartment, underground parking spaces and a children’s playground. (Long Beach Post)
  5. The Long Beach Rescue Mission stood in the gap on Monday. When the weather turned miserable, the mission sent out vans with supplies and folks who reach out to unhoused people they can find. Whenever possible, the staff tries to persuade folks to come back to the shelter. Whenever someone agrees, their things get loaded into the van. Mission workers brought “10 people back with them to the shelter, including a pregnant woman.” (Signal Tribune)
