🌱 Respect For Susanna Twaite! + Fund Veterans Stadium Demo, Rebuild?

The quickest way to get caught up on the most important things happening today in Long Beach.

(Patch Media)

Hello, everybody; today is National Hug Holiday Day, which was put on the calendar by the Hugs for Health Foundation. It's me, Sylvia, your host of the Long Beach Daily — here to impart everything you need to know about what's happening locally. Here goes...

We express respect for Susanna Twaite, a woman with a vision. Also, should taxpayers be on the hook for taking down and then rebuilding Veterans Stadium? Finally, what killed a woman on the 710 Freeway?

💧 Water Crisis Poll! 💧
Residents are limited to watering their landscapes two days per week, before 9 a.m. or after 4 p.m. What else should the City do to deal with the water crisis? Please let me know your thoughts! So far, 42.9% want to mandate drought-resistant landscaping, 28.6% want to recycle wastewater for irrigation, and another 28.6% want to build a desalination plant at the coast.

Here are the top stories today in Long Beach:

  1. Wrap The Kids is no more. The non-profit that had “homeless people helping other homeless people” closed its doors after the 63-year-old founder’s terminal cancer diagnosis. “We had a good seven and a half years,” she said. Respect for Susanna Twaite! (Press-Telegram)
  2. Are you a homeowner willing to pay “$19 for every $100,000 of assessed value” to “finance the demolition and rebuilding of Veterans Stadium?” The LB Community College District Board of Trustees thinks you will, and intends to put a bond measure on the November ballot. In the past, voters approved several bond measures that would “fund new construction, renovation, and repairs at the college.” (LB Post)
  3. On Tuesday morning, at around 2:30 a.m., the LBPD located a dead woman in “a car on the Anaheim Street exit ramp from the southbound 710 Freeway.” While there were bullet holes on the car’s side, there is not yet confirmation whether she was struck by gunfire. The vehicle crashed at the offramp. (NBC, ABC)
  4. We learned on Friday that LB Poly’s Peyton Watson is going to the Denver Nuggets “as a first-round NBA Draft pick.” If your child has NBA hopes, Poly seems to be the place to be. So far, nine alumni have made the jump from Jackrabbits to NBA teams. Congratulations! (LB Post Sports)
  5. Mark your calendars! The 2022 LB Pride & Parade Festival will take place July 8 through 10 at 450 East Shoreline Drive. The first day is a Teen Pride celebration. Festivities include community walls, a family fun zone, and a roller rink. (Average Socialite)
