Here are the top stories today in Long Beach:
- LBPD officer Chris Zamora was found dead Saturday afternoon. He was the victim of an apparent suicide. Although only 44 years old, Zamora had a 20-year “very distinguished career, and was especially noted for his work within the Gang Detail.” At this time, fellow officers, particularly those at the east division substation, are dealing with the aftermath of the unexpected loss. The Police Officers Association released a statement recognizing that suicide is a crisis within the profession, but “help is available 24/7 for those who are suffering. You are not alone, and it is OK to seek help when you are hurting.” Please call the National Suicide Hotline at 1-800-273-8255. (LB Post)
- As of Friday, 40,700 containers have been sitting at the ports for more than nine days. On Monday, there were 82 container ships waiting to dock in the LB and L.A. ports. Monday was also the day that the $100 penalty for containers left at the ports took effect. While this fee was supposed to get carriers to put freight transport as a high priority, “German carrier Hapag-Lloyd made clear that the new charge will be passed on to clients.” (Splash 247)
- The Greater Los Angeles New Car Dealers Association donated $10,000 to the Long Beach City College's Automotive Technology program. The donation took place October 25, but LBCC did not release the details until Monday. “The $10,000 will be used to help LBCC's Automotive Technology students with scholarships, purchase cutting-edge technology and equipment for LBCC classrooms, and provide recent graduates with new tools once they enter the industry if they can't afford to purchase them on their own.” (Patch)
- Vice Mayor Rex Richardson and LB Firefighters remind residents to pull over to the right when they hear first responders approaching. If you’re in an intersection, continue to go through it and then pull to the right. Come to a full stop. Also, remember that there may be multiple first responder vehicles passing you. (@lbfirefighters) And, while we’re on the subject of driving, here’s another reminder. When there’s a school bus stopped with flashing lights in front of you, you have to stop, too. This goes for the car in the next lane over, too.
- What happens to the 5th district if the redistricting map goes through as drawn? Incumbent Mungo has sent out an email to constituents mentioning that she still owns a Cal Heights home. However, she also noted that “moving back would be a big decision. My family and I will need to decide what is best once we know the lines are final.” If she were to seek a third term, it would free her from the threat of incumbent and former CD 5 council member Gerrie Schipske.
