- Kry Lay, one of the LB Cambodian community’s founding fathers, has died at the age of 79. His influence and planning led to the creation of numerous social, educational, and religious support services for Cambodian refugees. (LB Post)
- The Alamitos Bay and Marina Pacifica shopping centers experienced a sudden influx of law enforcement. Present were the LB PD, Sheriff, Homeland Security, and Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Staying mum about the incident, we know that “several dozen” people were detained. (LB Post)
- Did you feel an earthquake? Reports began streaming in around 9:20 a.m. on Friday. However, Dr. Lucy Jones explains that there was no earthquake at all; rather, what you felt was most likely the effect of a supersonic aircraft boom over the ocean. (@DrLucyJones)
- Bird rescuers say that the Fourth of July festivities in the LB Harbor may have disturbed a large tern colony nesting on an anchored barge. To date, they have rescued 110 chicks. “If you frequent the area, we invite you to take action by keeping an eye out for orphaned or injured birds.” (Bird Rescue)
- Cruise ships are back! Grounded for more than 15 months, cruise lines will once again dock in LB. Carnival Panorama leaves on August 21, which is the official cruise launch date for the port. (Whittier Daily News)
