Here are the top stories today in Long Beach:
- Val Lerch, the former council member for District 9 and vice mayor, has died at the age of 69. Diagnosed with cancer in March 2020, Lerch lost his battle on Sunday. He died at home with his family surrounding him. Residents remember him for his work on the Veterans Day parade, North LB redevelopment projects, and the Citizen Police Complaint Commission. (LBReport)
- The LBUSD is joining the Press-Telegram’s Let’s Play Ball campaign. This effort encourages residents to donate new sports balls between Nov. 29 and Dec. 17 that will then go to the Boys & Girls Club in LB. In 2020, more than 2,000 balls were donated. But since we are getting Patch readers involved this year, who knows how many more the schools will get? Leave your donations in bins at Cleveland, Chavez, Jordan HS, Homes, Herrera, Dooley, Tincher Prep, Rogers Jr. High, and Marshall Jr. High. (CA News Times)
- The fixer-upper with the famous fairy tale façade is for sale. Located at 3659 Woodruff Avenue, the property is in the East End and has been undergoing renovations for years. As a result, you can buy into the sought-after neighborhood for only $850,000. However, you are taking on a renovation that will cost you at least another $150,000 because the house is pretty much gutted. With the listing active as of Monday, strike the iron while it’s hot. (LB Post)
- The Harbor City Food Pantry is hosting its second annual turkey giveaway. You can register on Eventbrite and leave your contact information. Depending on the availability of donations, you may be selected to receive a complete turkey kit that includes the uncooked bird and ingredients for the sides, which you would pick up on Wednesday between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. (Eventbrite)
- The women’s basketball team at Long Beach State is on fire. With a defense that is second to none, the team has had an undefeated season thus far. The latest victory, 66-50, came against Santa Clara on Sunday. (The 562)
