🌱 Rubbish Fire + Boat Auction + No, Ports Aren’t On 24/7 Yet
Stay up to date on what's new near you with the Long Beach Daily.

Good morning, Long Beach! It's Friday, so let's get you started with everything you need to know going on in town today.
The smoke you smelled came from Wilmington. Also, if you don’t mind buying a boat that could be a steal or a money pit, there’s an auction for you! Finally, the President used the past tense incorrectly.

Here are the top stories today in Long Beach:
- There was a rubbish fire in Wilmington. The smoke affected several Long Beach neighborhoods, which caused Nextdoor posts to blow up. It took 88 firefighters to get control of the blaze near 1420 North Alameda Street. (LB Post)
- There’s going to be another Marine Bureau Boat Auction. Planned for October 23, you can show up and look at the vessels at 8 a.m. with bidding starting an hour later. If the rules from the last event are any indication, remember that everything is sold “as is,” and there are no refunds. Also, you are barred from bringing an auction vessel to any LB Marina for six months. (LB Parks, Rules)
- Remember when President Joe Biden announced that the ports in LB and L.A. are on 24/7 operations to put a dent in the long parade of cargo ships off the coast? Well, that isn’t actually the case. What is happening is that Pier T works around the clock Monday through Thursday only as part of a pilot program. “The operational details of transitioning to a 24/7 model are still being discussed and worked out.” (LB Post)
- In related news, the LB Port truckers won a wage theft settlement. XPO Logistics settled a suit by truck drivers stating they earned less than minimum wage. At issue were two XPO subsidiaries that “did not pay drivers for missed meal and rest periods, did not reimburse them for business expenses, and paid them less than legal wages.” The settlement is $30 million. - Although the Queen Mary will not have its annual Halloween event this year, the Aquarium of the Pacific is going forward with its 22nd annual Scarium of the Pacific. There will be children’s costume contests, story times, magic shows, crafts, and more. Festivities will take place October 30 and 31. (OC Breeze)
