Here are the top stories today in Long Beach:
- Update: Governor Gavin Newsom, who soundly defeated his recall, has signed SB-9 and 10 into law. As you may remember, some City Council members attempted a Hail Mary pass to get the Governor to veto the bills, but couldn’t even agree on that. Of the currently 59,000 single-family lots in Long Beach, 4,600 have more than 8,000 square feet. Insiders speculate that these lots could be the ones affected by the construction of two duplexes. (LB Post)
- After 559 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in LBUSD schools since August 31, the school district will now pause its weekly testing. The district argues that it conducted some 60,000 tests and found a positivity rate below 1%. Critics say that it means putting a child in a room filled with other unvaccinated kids (for the younger students) without the assurance of weekly testing. They also point to the LAUSD, which continues its testing. (LBReport)
- The Long Beach Symphony is taking the stage again. Pops concerts begin October 23. Classical concerts restart November 13. “The Long Beach Symphony Association Board of Directors voted on September 14, 2021, to require proof of vaccination for all attendees; negative COVID-19 tests will not be sufficient to attend a Symphony concert at either the Long Beach Terrace Theater or the Long Beach Arena.” (OC Breeze)
- Former President George W. Bush will speak tonight at the Terrace Theater at 300 East Ocean Boulevard as part of the Distinguished Speakers Series. Other speakers in the series include Douglas Brinkley, Diana Nyad, Tara Westover, Jay Leno, Malala Yousafzai, David Cameron, Bob Woodward, and Dan Buettner. (Speakers LA)
- North Long Beach has a Mr. Fries Man! Located at 1009 East Artesia Boulevard, it takes a chance on a building that has seen a high tenant turnover, the last one being Tiki’n Lei Hawaiian Kitchen. Ask about the “10% student, military and first-responder discount!” (The HiLo)
