Scooter Rider Fatally Struck By Car Near Long Beach Park: Police

The crash happened early Labor Day morning near Recreation Park in Long Beach, according to authorities.

LONG BEACH, CA — A man riding a scooter was fatally struck by a car early Monday morning near Recreation Park in Long Beach, according to authorities.

Police say the scooter rider was going southbound outside a marked crosswalk near the area of Federation Drive and Seventh Street around 3:19 p.m. when he was struck by the driver of a 2016 Hyundai Accent traveling eastbound in the area.

A bystander and officers rendered aid to the man before Long Beach Fire Department personnel arrived, according to the Long Beach Police Department.

Fire Department personnel took the injured scooter rider to a local hospital, where he died from his injuries, police said. His identity was not immediately released as the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner's Office works to notify his relatives of his death.

The driver of the vehicle, identified by police as a 28-year-old Laguna Beach resident, remained at the scene and cooperated with the investigation, police said.

It appears that speed, distracted driving or impaired driving were not factors in the crash, according to the LBPD.
