Here are the top stories today in Long Beach:

  1. Scorpion Update: The Scorpion is the Foxtrot-class Soviet sub that is moored next to the Queen Mary. It was closed to the public in 2015, after which its decay continued, along with a raccoon infestation. But as of Tuesday, the City still doesn’t know who to make clean up the mess. It was purchased by a Palm Springs resident in 1998. This owner supposedly tried to sell it in 2019, but nobody knows if that happened. Then there’s the Queen Mary’s former operator that leased the sub but is now in bankruptcy. So, who wants a submarine? (LB Post)
  2. Redistricting Update: Why do politicians want to carve up CD 5? A Tuesday report reveals that “political interests” want to annex the “NE quadrant of the Plaza area north to Wardlow Road” to CD 4. Incidentally, this move would succeed in removing incumbent Mungo, challenger Schipske, and Eastside Voice founder and gadfly Lee from CD 5. It’s interesting to note that this idea has the vociferous support of council-censured “one-term former CD” member Pearce, who claims to have more than 50 names in support of the carving to “protect Black neighborhoods, keep the Cambodian community together, and solidify a Latino cultural district that includes a library and the Museum of Latin America Art.” (LBReport)
  3. Did you see the huge plumes of smoke on Tuesday? Although outside the LB city limits, they affected traffic and air quality. It was a Bellflower storage facility that went up in flames, near the corner of Woodruff Avenue and Artesia Boulevard. (Nextdoor, ABC)
  4. Bluff Park was the stage for a Tuesday protest against vaccine mandates. Speakers called for “defying mask and vaccine rules.” Attendees consisted of a mix of concerned parents of school-aged children, first responders worried about job losses, and some who didn’t oppose the vaccinations but were strongly against a mandate forcing people to get the shot. Of the city’s 6,097 workers, 77% are vaccinated. Hot spots of vaccine resistance are in the fire department (64% are vaccinated) and the police department (54% are vaccinated). (LB Post)
  5. The City announced Tuesday that it will dedicate the facility at 1900 Walnut Avenue to Dee Andrews. Andrews “served as a dedicated member of City Council for more than 13 years and has been one of our longest-serving members on the council, including serving two years as our Vice Mayor,” Mayor Robert Garcia explained. The name change to “Dee Andrews Sports Complex at Chittick Field” takes place November 20 at 10 a.m. (City of LB)
