Here are the top five stories in Long Beach today:

  1. The Southeast Resource Recovery Facility (SERRF) is the city’s trash-burning facility from the 1980s on Pier Avenue. We learned Tuesday that State Assemblywoman Cristina Garcia wants to see it shut down. The LB City Council wants to preserve SERRF. Opponents say that burning trash “emits greenhouse gases and contaminated ash.” Proponents say that “the plant only emits carbon dioxide.” (Press-Telegram)
  2. Bixby Knolls’ First Fridays is combining with Women’s History Month for a fun Friday evening along Atlantic Avenue. Free to attend, there will be live music, free sangria at the Better Half Boutique checkout, and a gift with a $100 purchase at Andyliz. The Big Red Bus will be on hand to make getting around easy. (Bixby Knolls Info)
  3. Toward the end of March, downtown LB will open the Shaun Lumachi Innovation Center at 309 Pine Avenue. It is slated to “provide an actual physical space for entrepreneurs and startups.” What sets it apart from other co-working venues is that there isn’t just workspace, but also “technical assistance and access to capital.” (LB Business Journal)
  4. What makes LB State’s Dirtbags Baseball so much fun? Aside from the game-play, there is the classic feel that you typically experience at Los Angeles Dodgers games. The big reason is the presence, expertise, and commitment of organist Dieter Ruehle, who plays the music not just for the Dodgers but now also for the Dirtbags. In fact, you can hear him “this weekend as Long Beach State hosts North Dakota State for a three-game series.” (The 562.org)
  5. Insomniac will bring its Day Trip dance party to the area adjacent to the Queen Mary. The promoters said Tuesday that it will take place June 25 and 26. (L.A. Daily News)
