Sewage Spill in L.A. River Closes All Beaches in Long Beach

At least 108,000 gallons of sewage is believed to have spilled and the spill is still ongoing, officials said.

LONG BEACH, CA — Health officials in Long Beach on Monday have closed all coastal beaches in the city following a sewage spill near downtown Los Angeles that ha entered the the Los Angeles River.

Long Beach's Acting Health Officer, Dr. Mauro Torno, issued the order Monday afternoon to close all coastal beaches until Health Department lab tests indicate the water is safe for swimming.

A broken sewage pipe in downtown Los Angeles released at least 108,00 gallons of sewage into the the river, and the spill is still ongoing, Ed Kamlan from the City Manager's Office said.
