First, today's weather:
Remaining cool with sunshine. High: 70 Low: 53.
Here are the top stories today in Long Beach:
- Passersby, boaters, and LBFD Marine Safety worked together to save a dog who seemed “bobbing” near a buoy. They had seen the little dog on Alamitos Beach when it got spooked, ran into the water, and swam away. A boater pulled the doggie to safety and transferred it to the FD’s rescue boat. Animal care is now taking care of the dog, which “appears to be a Shih Tzu mix, … about 2 years old, and … female.” (LB Post)
- Insiders believe that there are “$24 billion in goods” sitting outside the ports of LB and L.A. This bottleneck is quickly becoming the poster child for supply chain problems. Another problem that the experts saw had to do with what happens when containers are finally unloaded. They sit “at the ports for days.” (KEYT)
- The LBPD is investigating the fatal shooting of a man in his 20s on the 6200 block of Downey Avenue. “At this time, the motive and circumstances surrounding the shooting are unknown.” If you have information, please call Homicide Detectives Sean Magee or Juan Carlos Reyes at (562) 570-7244. (LBPD)
- Mayor Robert Garcia, tweeting from his personal account, has been discussing the city’s transition away from fossil fuels. Citing a recent report, he estimates that there is a “pathway to end (oil well) production in our city by 2035.” This would put LB a decade ahead of the state. (@RobertGarcia)
- Dr. Stephanie Wear will address what leaves beach city residents scratching their heads: untreated wastewater entering the ocean. LB residents are familiar with the warnings of “sewage spills” that close beaches for days. You can make a free reservation to attend her lecture at the Aquarium on the Pacific.
