(Patch Media)

Hey, friends; today is World Rainforest Day, which was observed for the first time in 2017 by the Rainforest Partnership. It's me, Sylvia, your host of the Long Beach Daily — here to tell you everything that's fit to print about what's happening in town. Follow along for the latest.

A 30-year-old father was shot in his vehicle with his seven-year-old son present. Also, a Naples teardown with a shortened lot costs around $5 million. Finally, unemployment is down to 4.6%, which is better than pre-pandemic figures!

📢 Fireworks Poll!
Fireworks are illegal in Long Beach. If the police are called, you may have to pay as much as $20,000 in response costs plus citation fines of $1,000. How do you feel about that? Please let me know your thoughts! (As of today, 13% don’t want fireworks, 76.1% want “safe and sane fireworks,” and 0.5% don’t care one way or the other while another 10.3% want to buy what they choose.)

Here are the top five stories today in Long Beach:

  1. There was a fatal shooting Saturday evening at around 8:46 p.m. A 30-year-old Palmdale man was shot in his car near Anaheim Street and Roswell Avenue. A seven-year-old boy was in the car with him but unhurt. "To commit such a heinous crime in any circumstance is unacceptable, but to do so on Father's Day in front of the victim's child is even more disgraceful. This blatant disregard for our community will not go unanswered, and our investigators are working diligently to identify anyone involved in the victim's death," said Police Chief Wally Hebeish. If you have information, please contact Homicide Detectives Michael Hubbard and Jesus Espinoza at (562) 570-7244. (LBPD)
  2. If you have roughly $5 million that are doing nothing with, you could own the property at 5 The Colonnade. In 1953, it became the custom home of “world-class tennis players.” It is now Naples’ run-down property, which is a nice way of describing the teardown. Oh, and the current owner, who will be your neighbor, “is redrawing the lot lines to increase his home’s property, which will cut into your lot size.” On the other hand, you get three boat slips. (LB Post)
  3. The city’s unemployment figures are looking good! In February 2020, it sat at 4.8%. The pandemic increased it to 19%. We learned Monday that this May it was down to 4.6%. “The only two industries that are really lagging are arts, entertainment, recreation and accommodation and food service,” an insider explained. (LB Business Journal)
  4. Looking ahead to Halloween but realizing that the traditional Queen Mary haunts won’t happen, event planners have come up with SHAQTOBERFEST. Shaquille O'Neal partnered with the brains behind the LA Haunted Hayride to create a family-friendly festival taking place in late September in front of the ship. During the day, events will be kid-friendly, after dark, things get “eekier.” "Halloween can't come soon enough," said O'Neal. Indeed. (NBC)
  5. Mark your calendars! The Baby Shark Live 2022 Splash Tour is Saturday! Taking place at the Terrace Theatre, sing along to “Baby Shark," "Five Little Monkeys," "Wheels On The Bus," "Jungle Boogie" and "Monkey Banana Dance!” The show is scheduled for 2 p.m. By the way, this show was initially scheduled for March 13. If you bought tickets, they will be honored! (Baby Shark Live)
