Here are the top stories in Long Beach today:

  1. Update: The school safety officer involved in the Millikan HS shooting is now the subject of a homicide investigation. You will remember that the shooting led to an 18-year-old woman’s death and the subsequent termination of the safety officer’s employment with the LBUSD. If you’re one of the witnesses to the incident, please reach out to Long Beach Homicide Detectives Ethan Shear or Jose Rodriguez at 562-570-7244. (KTLA 5)
  2. On Sunday, there’ll be a bunch of street closures to accommodate the Long Beach Marathon. The closures will be on a rolling basis and go on from about 5 a.m. to 2 p.m. There are also temporary “no parking” signs; if you run afoul these signs, your car will be towed to the yard at 3111 East Willow Street. (City of LB)
  3. The Marina Pacifica Shopping Center at 6272 East PCH is getting a new tenant! LA Fitness leased the 33,987-square-foot space formerly occupied by Best Buy. Look for the gym to open early in 2022. (Rebusiness Online)
  4. Under the heading of ‘better late than never’, the City Council voted to create “a single application for the Emergency Rental Assistance Program.” Vice Mayor Rex Richardson noted that there are “15,800 households still behind on paying their rent” even though the eviction moratorium expired last month. Council member Mary Zendejas explained that there are 8,500 applications still unfinished. So far, only 2,500 households were helped. (Daily 49er)
  5. You can join Partners of Parks in raising the funds to rebuild the Admiral Kidd playground. Right now, the goal is $1 million by December. This would allow for a six-month construction period, which would open the new playground right in time for summer vacation. If you are looking to have a commemorative brick placed in your name, $300 to tinyurl.com/helpkidd is all it takes. (ABC 7)
