📰 Here are the top stories in Long Beach today:
1) There was a fatal accident at Studebaker Road and Spring Street just before midnight on Tuesday. A 2007 Honda Civic struck and killed a man reportedly lying “in the roadway, outside a marked crosswalk.” The driver remained on the scene and “at this time, neither speed nor distracted or impaired driving are believed to be contributing factors in the collision.” (My News LA)
2) Tuesday was another busy day for the LBPD. In the evening, officers responded to a shooting at 14th Street and Locust Avenue. A 48-year-old man reportedly shot at a victim and then “barricaded himself in a motor home near the crime scene.” He “was booked for assault with a firearm and prohibited person in possession of body armor.” Another call took officers to the 1300 block of Ximeno Avenue, where they encountered a domestic violence incident with a subsequent stabbing. They booked a 43-year-old suspected of “assault with a deadly weapon, domestic violence, and contempt of court.” (LBPD)
3) It’s official! The Artesia Boulevard transformation project is a go! The City approved spending $36.2 million on improvements that run from Susana Avenue to Downey Avenue. Residents can look forward to added protected bike lanes, landscaping in medians, additional traffic lights, and bus shelter upgrades. The projected completion date of the overhaul of the 3.2-mile boulevard portion is the end of 2023. According to the Public Works Department, “only one side of Artesia will be under construction at a time so that the entire street is not affected by ongoing work.” (Long Beach Post)
4) On Tuesday, the staff at the Aquarium of the Pacific got busy and moved 20 penguins, 80 lorikeets and 15 shore birds inside. Operators deemed it too dangerous to keep them in outdoor exhibits, with cases of Avian Influenza (H5N1) having been diagnosed in Los Angeles County wild birds. “That means the Lorikeet Forest, June Keyes Penguin Habitat and Shorebird Sanctuary exhibits will remain closed until bird flu is no longer present in the region.” (Press-Telegram)
5) The Office of Civic Innovation invites you to give input on the proposed LGBTQ+ corridor that would be constructed along Broadway. The visioning meeting will take place on October 27 at 6:30 p.m. at the Bixby Park Community Center. “The LGBTQ+ Cultural District will serve as a community hub, showcasing queer local history and supporting local businesses in attracting new visitors.” (City of LB)
