Here are the top five stories in Long Beach today:
- A shoutout to Dawn Duncan, who will turn 100 years Saturday! Besides this major milestone, this avid reader of historical non-fiction enjoys having company over for her made-from-scratch tamale pie. And where does a centenarian meet new friends? Duncan spent 34 years volunteering at the MemorialCare Miller Children’s & Women’s Hospital, Long Beach. We need more like her. (Press-Telegram)
- What should you do if you find a baby squirrel? El Dorado Park employees said Tuesday that they “have been finding baby squirrels throughout the park.” You have options. First, call a staff member at (562) 570-1745. They’ll come out and assess the situation. If you’re a bit more hands-on, download the linked recording of a baby squirrel crying. Keep the baby squirrel where you found it, place your phone or another recording device near the little critter, and play it on a loop. Hide. Keep an eye on things to see if mom comes back. (El Dorado Nature Center and Regional Park)
- The LB Airport is hosting a contest for local artists of all ages. The theme is “Plane to See,” and the goal is to make aviation-themed designs that will “be used to create coloring sheets for travelers of all ages.” Ten winners’ creations will be used; these 10 also receive $500 honorariums. The Airport “is looking to update, diversify and localize its coloring sheets with uplifting illustrations of the airport, its history, famous aviators, women in aviation, airplanes and air travel in the modern age.” You can submit your creations online starting Tuesday until March 31. Winners will be announced around May. (City of LB)
- Skullcrack is coming to Long Beach. The music, which has been described as “a high-energy boot in the face,” is a “hardcore punk/crossover thrash band.” If you haven’t been to a high-energy show in a while, head to Alex’s Bar on Thursday at 8 p.m. (LA Weekly)
- When gourmet egg rolls are your game, Rella Rolls at 5433 Atlantic Ave. is going to be the name in the summer. This eatery will be opening up in what used to be Any’s Snack Bar near the corner of Atlantic and Market. Operated by the Egg Roll Queen Tarella Golden herself, whose offerings you might have been enjoying on the down-low, a win at “The Price Is Right” gave her the opportunity to open a storefront in style. Look forward to “over 30 types of fusion food fillings for her egg rolls that often feature soul and comfort foods.” (The Hi Lo)
