📢 Fireworks Poll!
Fireworks are illegal in Long Beach. If the police are called, you may have to pay as much as $20,000 in response costs plus citation fines of $1,000. How do you feel about that? Please let me know your thoughts! (As of today, 9.7% don’t want fireworks, 80.1% want “safe and sane fireworks,” and 0.4% don’t care one way or the other while another 9.8% want to buy what they choose.)
Here are the top five stories in Long Beach today:
- A shoutout to Poly HS and freshman Ruthie Heis, who were recognized by Grades of Green for “continued efforts to reduce waste.” We learned on Friday that Poly HS received the “Campus Waste Warriors Award and a $500 eco-grant.” Heis is a member of the school’s Green Team and was recognized as Student of the Year for her environmental leadership. (LB Schools)
- The Urban Townhouse project at 1115 E. Artesia Blvd. is a go! With zoning in place, groundbreaking took place last week. The building will be “a three-story, five-unit townhouse” that is intended “for working class families that live with multiple generations of relatives.” Income ranges, for a family of five, are “$102,950 to $129,688 per year.” (LB Business Journal)
- On Thursday, employees of the LBPD participated in their annual Law Enforcement Torch Run. The event is “the largest fundraiser for Special Olympics, with more than 2,000 officers in So Cal championing acceptance and inclusion.” (LBPD)
- If you have a difficult time wrapping your head around the inflation, you’re not alone. On Friday, officials released an inflation report, and California residents are paying “about 15% more for meat, poultry and eggs; 11.4% more for milk; and 9.5% more for fruits and vegetables than last year. It cost 6% more to put clothes on their backs, and 5.1% more for alcohol. Housing costs spiked by 6.7%.” President Joe Biden points to the Russian invasion of Ukraine as a significant factor. He also urges Congress to pass a tax reform bill that would “make the wealthiest Americans and big corporations pay their fair share.” (Patch)
- We learned on Friday that the Aquarium of the Pacific is home to a newly hatched Magellanic penguin! This baby “will live in the nest for a few weeks before moving to the behind-the-scenes penguin nursery. The penguin will join the penguin habitat this fall.” Of course, you don’t have to wait this long to see it. There’s a webcam! (LB Local News)
