📢 Fireworks Poll!
Fireworks are illegal in Long Beach. If the police are called, you may have to pay as much as $20,000 in response costs plus citation fines of $1,000. How do you feel about that? Please let me know your thoughts! (As of today, 9.9% don’t want fireworks, 79.9% want “safe and sane fireworks,” and 0.6% don’t care one way or the other while another 9.7% want to buy what they choose.)

Here are the top five stories in Long Beach today:

  1. The Model Boat Shop is back! A shoutout to Wilson HS graduating senior Peter Beck, who is an alumnus of the program and now wants to enable other kids to enjoy the experience. Closed for the last four years, the shop reopens “from June 20 to Aug. 5 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday” at 5119 E. Colorado Street as a drop-in program. (Press-Telegram)
  2. In the early morning hours on Sunday, officers were called to a hospital where a shooting victim had checked in. The victim told the LBPD that “he was inside a parked vehicle on Ocean Boulevard and Cherry Avenue when he heard presumed gunfire and observed he had been struck.” Officers were unable to locate the crime scene. (LBPD)
  3. The parklet program, which allowed restaurants to serve patrons outside during the pandemic, is scheduled to lapse at the end of June. “Of the 130 temporary installations put up by businesses across the city, just 25 owners have expressed interest in converting them into permanent structures,” which would require restaurants to invest in designs, materials, and insurance. Some critics don’t like the structures because of noise, loss of parking places, and challenges for the disabled to use sidewalks. (LB Post)
  4. Temple Emanu-El invites you to attend “an inclusive Juneteenth Shabbat on June 17.” Under the leadership of Rabbi Jack Zanerhaft, the City Manager will be the guest speaker. There will also be refreshments and entertainment. Be there at 7:30 p.m. (Patch)
  5. Mark your calendars! The inimitable Justin Rudd is not only hosting a 30-minute beach cleanup on Saturday, but also a National Anthem singing contest! Head on down to 1 Granada Avenue at 10 a.m. If you would like to participate in the contest, be prepared to sing a cappella the last few bars of the song; if you do well, you may be asked to sing the entire first verse. “Winner will get a $1,000 appearance contract to sing at 20-30 upcoming Long Beach events.” (Justin Rudd)
