🌱 Sidewalk Driver Arrested + Translator Omits + Election Day Off

Here's the latest from Long Beach, delivered straight to your inbox.

(Patch Media)

Hello, neighbors! It's me again, Sylvia, your host of the Long Beach Daily.

The man who (allegedly) took a domestic disturbance and turned it into a hit-and-run has been arrested. Also, real-time translation and interpretation are a lot harder than they look. Finally, the Mayor want the Feds to build on his success.

The Daily is made possible by local business, The Appliance Coach.

Here are the top stories in Long Beach today:

  1. Update on the Sidewalk Hit-and-Run: Yesterday, we talked about the Sunday domestic disturbance that turned into a hit-and-run in the 1300 block of Orange Avenue. The LBPD arrested a 27-year-old suspect in Compton and impounded his vehicle. The suspect “faces six counts each of attempted murder and assault with a deadly weapon, as well as a count of felony domestic violence.” The six people struck are in stable condition at the hospital. (KTLA)
  2. The LB Redistricting Commission met on Wednesday and several neighbors of the Westside attended. They addressed officials in Spanish, which should not have been a problem, seeing that the City invested in a translator. However, it turns out that this translator was heard delivering “omission of whole sections of testimony.” Bilingual attendees complained, but the damage was done. The Deputy City Manager noted that the translator is competent, “but the city would be more mindful of who translates public comments in the future.” (LB Post)
  3. Building on the City’s success to make November Election Day a city holiday, Mayor Robert Garcia, tweeting from his personal account, called for the feds to do the same. “Workers deserve an opportunity to engage in their democracy,” he noted. What are the odds of that happening? (@RobertGarcia)
  4. If you’d like to have your photo taken with Snoop, Kobe, and Nipsey, you need to head to 2725 East South Street. There, a mural is honoring them and others. It is a stunning work of art that you have to see in person. (@kobemurals)
  5. The Port of LB sponsors Twilight Cinema that runs until December 18. These are free drive-in movies on Saturday nights. The location is the LBCC parking lot at 1305 East PCH. The lot opens at 5 p.m., movies start at 6:30 p.m. You have to reserve your spot by 9 a.m. starting on the Thursday of the week before the event. The schedule features “Cruella” on 11-6, “Edward Scissorhands” on 11-13, “The Grinch” on 11-20, “Elf” on 12-11, and “The Polar Express” on 12-18. (PoLB)
