The quickest way to get caught up on the most important things happening today in Long Beach.

Hey, people of Long Beach; today is National Underground America Day, which was created by earth-shelter architect Malcolm Wells in 1974! It's me again, Sylvia, your host of the Long Beach Daily.
If you regularly drive on Ximeno near 7th, you’ll be in for some detours. Also, the Rock For Vets event is back! Finally, here’s how you can get rid of that chemical waste that’s been piling up in your garage or shed.

Who should be the next Long Beach Mayor? Please let me know your thoughts! (As of today, Suzie Price leads the pack with 44.6% of your votes, but Rex Richardson is second with 25.7%. Franklin Sims has 15.5%, and Joshua Rodriguez comes in with 10.1%!)
Here are the top five stories in Long Beach today:
- Last Friday, a sinkhole formed at the edge of the L.A. County Sanitation District’s pumping plant, which borders “an alleyway on Ximeno Avenue all the way to Seventh Street.” We learned Friday that crews detected the need for major sewage line repairs, which could close parts of Ximeno near 7th “for weeks.” The timeframe for the Ximeno Avenue project is currently uncertain and will depend on how quickly materials can be delivered to the worksite. (LB Post)
- The Music Is The Remedy, aka the Rock For Vets event is back! This year, it will be on May 30 at Jimmy E’s Bar & Grill on 2951 Cherry Avenue. After a COVID-driven hiatus, the party continues from 1 to 4 p.m. and is a fundraiser “dedicated to helping military veterans recover from maladies physical and mental through music.” After you pay your respects at the Memorial Day cemetery event, head on over! (Press-Telegram)
- Do you have hazardous waste sitting in your garage or shed? We’re talking chemicals such as “cleaners, paints, electronic devices, batteries, lawn products, and auto products.” You can get rid of them, no questions asked and no money required, on the second and fourth Saturday of every month from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. In other words, the EDCO Recycling and Transfer Environmental Collection Center at 2755 California Avenue is open today! (LB Recycles)
- The Watersafe Swim School is hiring! With locations in Los Alamitos and Seal Beach, the school is so serious about finding good applicants that they are willing to pay “$500 as part of the Watersafe Referral Program.” If you know a qualified individual, and they apply, you could get $250 if they’re hired and another $250 when they receive their training! Recent high school or college grads, this is an opportunity to bring in some money! (OC Breeze)
- If you’re a loyal follower of artists Jana Opincariu and Daniel Kathalynas, you know all about totems. You can visit their exhibition “Dark Totem” at the Hellada Gallery at 117 Linden Avenue until May 28. Hours are from 2 to 7 p.m. (Random Lengths News)

From my notebook:
