🦃 Thanksgiving Poll!
Thanksgiving is on November 24th. How do you celebrate? So far, 56.3% celebrate a big meal as a family tradition, while 25% don’t celebrate and treat it like any other day. In a smaller group, 6.3% don’t celebrate because they feel it glorifies the conquest of Native Americans; however, 12.5% choose to celebrate a traditional Thanksgiving out of gratitude.
📰 Here are the top stories in Long Beach today:
1) A 47-year-old man is in custody for the murder of a 36-year-old woman in the 700 block of East Wardlow Road on Monday, just before 9 a.m. Reportedly, the two were in a relationship and had an argument that escalated to the killing. The suspect initially fled to Paramount but turned himself in. He “was booked for one count of murder, and bail was set at $2,000,000.” (LBPD)
2) A juvenile was struck by gunfire in the 1700 block of Cerritos Avenue at about 1:20 a.m. on Tuesday. It's interesting to note that he didn’t call the police; however, officers were alerted by the hospital when the young man checked himself in with a gunshot wound. (Long Beach Police Department)
3) Simply Salad opened on October 3 at 1775 Ximeno Avenue without much fanfare. Owners have a high opinion of their fare, dubbing it “Snoop’s new favorite greens.” Guests build their own salads with a “choice of five types of greens, 65 toppings (including 'premium' items) and 29 dressings.” We learned on Monday that the co-owner was the mastermind behind the chicken sandwich wars before the pandemic, which had customers waiting in long lines to get the popular meals. (The HilLo)
4) Long Beach will introduce a first-time, first-generation homebuyer assistance program in early 2023. It targets “low- and moderate-income families traditionally underrepresented in homeownership” and offers some 100 households a chance to receive $20,000 for a down payment or closing costs. You might qualify if you had a May 2022 income not exceeding “150% of the Los Angeles County Area Median Income.” For a two-person household, this would be $109,350. (City of LB)
5) On Sunday, the Rancho Los Cerritos will host a FREE history talk on “Beyond the Rancho: Creating ‘Home’ in Post-Conquest Los Angeles.” The presenter is Dr. Margie Brown-Coronel, who will emphasize “gender, families, and social networks in late 19th Century Southern California.” The event runs from 2:30 p.m. to 4 p.m. on the veranda; please RSVP.
