🌱 Some LBUSD Kids Go Virtual + Redistricting Chaos + Tamales!

Catch up on what's going on in town with the Long Beach Daily.

(Patch Media)

Happy Friday, neighbors! Let's get you all caught up on what's happening locally to start today off on an informed note.

Three elementary school classes are virtual again. Also, redistricting is beginning to look like a Shakespearean tragedy. Finally, if you love tamales, there’ll be a festival for you!

Here’s a GasBuddy update. Right now, there are only two gas stations that sell gas for $3.95 a gallon unleaded. They are the ARCO on 1001 Redondo Avenue and the ARCO on 3201 East 7th Street. Everyone else is selling above $4; yes, even Sam’s Club ($4.09).

First, today's weather:

Mostly sunny and very warm. High: 89 Low: 62.

Here are the top stories today in Long Beach:

  1. We learned Wednesday that the LBUSD has returned three elementary school classrooms to remote learning due to virus quarantines. They are at Longfellow, Lowell, and Carver. While officials didn’t offer a confirmed number, they do suggest that “there have been between eight and 10 classwide closures at the elementary-school level this school year” already. To put this in perspective, please note that the LBUSD has 1,500 elementary classrooms. (LB Post)
  2. Redistricting Update: The Wednesday meeting of the redistricting commission resulted in contentious discussions. If approved, the Port would be split between two districts, a new Downtown district would emerge, council members Allen and Mungo would have to move to run again in their districts, and the second district could include Bluff Park and Zaferia. The fifth district will be shifted beyond recognition, losing the “Ranchos, Plaza, El Dorado Park Estates, Imperial Estates and El Dorado Park South” to the fourth district. The final vote will be taken on the 18th. (LB Post, LBReport)
  3. There’ll be an International Tamales Festival, y’all! Wednesday’s announcement identifies it as an “all-day holiday inspired fair featuring a diverse selection of Latin-American cuisine, from regional tamales, Latin inspired dishes, drinks, tequila tastings, a best homemade tamales contest, and a full line-up of entertainment, activities, and vendors.” The target date is December 5, when it will run from noon to 8 p.m. at the Scottish Rite Events Centre. (OC Breeze)
  4. Do spending Thanksgiving Eve and the day itself in the kitchen somehow not sound like fun? Do you hate the hours of cleanup that come after a Thanksgiving meal? Local LB eateries got you. Olive’s Gourmet Grocer will cook for four or eight if you order by 11-20, The Attic can serve four to six when you order by 11-22, and Lacquered will serve five when you order by 11-24. Sizzler also offers to handle the cooking for you. (The HiLo)
  5. Passersby found a decomposing dead body Wednesday morning. The woman was floating in the water near the 1000 block of Queens Way Drive. If you have any information, please call LBPD Homicide Detectives Michael Hubbard or Michael Hutchinson at 562-570-7244. (KTLA)
