A fatality at the Sprint Nationals has Council Member Price asking if the City should continue hosting the event. Also, police officers shot an armed grocery store robbery suspect. Finally, the PD was supposed to switch sworn helicopter pilots for civilians; but has it?

Here are the top stories in Long Beach today:

  1. The LB Sprint Nationals speedboat races saw a fatality Sunday, when a racer was ejected from his vessel’s cockpit while traveling at a speed of more than 110 mph. Citing another fatal crash three years ago, Council Member Suzie Price suggested that LB needs to reevaluate whether to continue hosting the event. (Mercury News)
  2. Police shot a grocery store robbery suspect in the 1700 block of Harbor Blvd., near the 710 and PCH. LBPD picked up the pursuit from Signal Hill, came to a vehicle crash site, and approached the armed suspect on foot. (NBC)
  3. The PD has been slow to implement the City Council’s proposed civilian pilot model. Facing a $30 million funding deficit, the PD was supposed to reduce the numbers of sworn pilots in favor of civilians. This situation will be a likely discussion point at today’s council meeting. (LB Post)
  4. The Long Beach Municipal Band will begin performing again next week, Tuesday. The first season after COVID-19 will only last two weeks; however, the band will be back for its usual series of performances in 2022. (LB Oceanside Press)
  5. Did you know that the 2028 Olympics will come to Los Angeles? Moreover, there are LB sites that will play a role in the games. They include the Belmont Pier, LB Lot, LB Arena, and the Waterfront. (Spectrum News 1)
