Mostly sunny and cool. High: 70 Low: 60.
Here are the top stories today in Long Beach:
- Stink update: The Dominguez Channel stench is not going down without a fight. Now, officials believe it’ll take another week to get rid of the smell that affects Carson and parts of Long Beach. In the meantime, the Department of Public Health warns residents to avoid “prolonged outdoor activities.” While so far they stick to the story that the stink comes from decaying organic material, there’s now an investigation whether there was “a discharge of materials, including cardboard, pallet pieces and ethanol that may or may not have entered the channel intentionally.” (LB Post)
- Online sports betting to fund homeless services? Long Beach Mayor Robert Garcia is in favor of this plan. In fact, this is an idea that has been around in Sacramento, where it is called the “California Sports Wagering and Consumer Protection Act.” “I’m joining my fellow mayors in endorsing this important initiative because this is an all-hands on deck moment in our fight against homelessness,” the Mayor explained. If this measure gets a million signatures, it qualifies for the ballot. (CBS)
- The Belmont Shore Business Association’s board of directors has decided to cancel the Christmas Parade again this year. Instead, there will be an all-day winter village that will stretch along Second Street. Organizers explain that “Financial constraints after the pandemic and the tightness of time caused by the remaining concerns of COVID-19” contributed to the decision. (California News Times)
- World Bank and HIS Markit have ranked ports for efficiency. After reviewing 351 container ports around the world, they ranked Long Beach as #333. Which port ranked highest for efficiency? The Port of Yokohama in Japan. (Times of San Diego)
- The Aquarium of the Pacific announces a new round of its African-American Scholar Program for 2022. There are $100,000 for qualified and selected applicants. Last year, the venue selected 10 students, each of whom received $10,000 in scholarships. “Applications for the 2022 African American Scholar Program are due by Dec. 31.” (The HiLo)
