Here are the top five stories today in Long Beach:

  1. Who is Long Beach’s best storyteller? The competition that has been ongoing for ten years is kicking off on March 7. Contestants meet at Malainey’s Grill, where “six-to-eight people tell six-minute true stories.” The winner gets $100 and a spot in the August final. Show up at the restaurant to be an audience member! (Press-Telegram)
  2. On Sunday, around 3 p.m., the LBPD arrived near Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue and New York Street, where there was said to be a stolen vehicle. Two suspects went running. While the police quickly detained one, a K9 unit assisted in locating the other one. (LB Post)
  3. TransVagrant at Gallery 478 will feature Marie Thibeault’s drawings. “Thibeault is a professor emerita of art at California State University, Long Beach, where she teaches painting and color theory.” Beginning Thursday, the artwork is a mixed media approach to dealing with the pandemic. (Random Lengths News)
  4. Do you know someone who embodies the “Spirit of Downtown?” The Downtown Long Beach Alliance would like your input. You have until Thursday to nominate a person or organization who should be “honored as difference makers in Downtown.” (Downtown Long Beach)
  5. Do you remember LB Ballet dancers performing “Guardians” ten years ago? The performance will once again be seen at the Aquarium of the Pacific this coming weekend. In the story, “big business comes in to build, then the power of industry begins to pollute and destroy marine life. But in this ballet, the industry tycoon sees first-hand how his big payday has dire consequences for the ocean.” (The HiLo)

Looking for a healthy alternative to that mid-week glass (or three) of wine? Our partners at Betera set out to create beverages that were sophisticated and flavorful enough to drink at cocktail hour but with zero hangover risk. (Their motto is “Drink like there’s tomorrow.”) Betera's drinks are designed by a Michelin-starred chef using natural botanicals — they're lightly effervescent, sippable, refreshingly bitter and at home in a stem glass or in a highball on the rocks. Betera offers three recipes — Rhubarb-Hibiscus, Elderflower-Lime and Ginger-Orange. We’ve tried all three and loved them equally — we recommend the mixed case as a great place to start.Betera has extended their 15% discount on first orders to Daily readers, in appreciation for the enthusiastic response so far.
