🌱Suit Over Stink + Rain Doesn't Erase Drought + 10 Digit Dialing
Learn everything going down near you with the Long Beach Daily.

Happy Sunday, neighbors! Let's get you all caught up to start today off on an informed note.
Did a warehouse fire send chemicals into the Dominguez Channel, contributing to the stink? Also, it’s raining, y’all, but we’re still in a drought. Finally, this weekend starts 10-digit dialing for cell phones (11 digits for landlines).
The Daily is made possible by local business, The Appliance Coach.

First, today's weather:
Partly sunny and cool. High: 71 Low: 59.
Here are the top stories today in Long Beach:
- Who’s responsible for the stink? Some Carson residents point their fingers at Art Naturals, a beauty supply company in Gardena. There was a warehouse fire on September 30, and residents filed a suit alleging that the company “stored ethanol-based hand sanitizers … and that these products got into the channel.” The fire is still under investigation. The public works’ director did say that “an investigation into the odor found the presence of chemicals that are contributing to the problem,” but didn’t name the substances. (KTLA)
- We finally had some rain, which marks the beginning of the rainy season, which, in sunny Southern Cal, doesn’t mean much. This year, for example, marked the “hottest and driest months on record.” Not surprisingly, Governor Gavin Newsome has issued a statewide drought emergency, which means that – rain notwithstanding – water restrictions might follow. In the meantime, there’s an 80% chance of rain on Monday. Enjoy! (LB Post)
- Starting today, October 24, “all calls within the 562 area code will require dialing a full 10-digit telephone number.” Before today, you were fine just dialing the standard seven digits. When the FCC designated 988 “as the National Suicide Prevention and Mental Health Crisis Lifeline,” LB, which has 988 prefixes, had to transition to “mandatory 10-digit dialing … for all local calls made on mobile phones; additionally, calls placed from landlines and wire lines will require 11-digit local dialing in the format of 1, plus the area code and telephone number.” (City of LB)
- LBCC’s Board of Trustees has voted to require “proof of vaccination for all LBCC staff and students.” Staff members have until January 3, 2022 to comply. Students must comply by January 24, 2022. (LBReport)
- LB Public Works is putting a dent into the city’s crumbling curbs. This year, the team upgraded “520 of our city’s curbs into ADA complaint curb ramps.” This benefits not only residents using wheelchairs and walkers, but also folks pushing strollers. The only fly in the ointment is the occasional flooding that these curbs seem to invite during rain. (@LBPublicWorks)
