Here are the top five stories in Long Beach today:
- Follow-up: On Monday, we talked about the eyewitness reports coming from the corner of LB Boulevard and West Victoria Street. The police informed us later that “officers located the suspect hiding in a dumpster, established a perimeter, and began to de-escalate the situation.” After a little while, the suspect surrendered, and “officers located and seized a firearm in the dumpster.” (Long Beach PD)
- The skate park in the recently reopened Lincoln Park will get a proper recognition event, complete with food and prizes, this Saturday from noon to 4 p.m. The Action Sports Kids Foundation (ASK) will be on hand and host “demonstrations from skateboarding, roller skating and BMX enthusiasts.” Other participants at the free event are Huck Skate Team, Powell Peralta Skate Team, Etnies Skate, and BMX teams. (Press-Telegram)
- Belmont Shore was the location for Saturday’s Red Shoes & Red Heels Walk, an event designed to bring attention to heart health. This walk is an annual event organized by Justin Rudd and his Community Action Team. Walkers went from Livingston Park to 2nd Street and back again. (Press-Telegram)
- On Saturday, the Long Beach State men’s volleyball team lost against UCLA. Insiders point to the team’s missing starting setter as being the likely cause for the upset. “I’m super proud of the week we had with some guys being out, guys out tonight, and to put that kind of grit together, that’s what it’s all about for our program,” Coach Alan Knipe said. Long Beach State plays Stanford on Friday. (The 562.org)
- Sunday marked the 50th anniversary of the Carnival Cruise Line, and the Port of Long Beach was on hand for a celebration. The Carnival Miracle took 2,000 guests onboard for a special cruise. “The company is commemorating its golden anniversary with 17 special cruises, which run through March 10 and feature at-sea ship meetups, special entertainment, and programming.” (LB Business Journal)
