🦃 Thanksgiving Poll!
Thanksgiving is on November 24th. How do you celebrate? So far, 44.6% celebrate a big meal as a family tradition, while 30.1% don’t celebrate and treat it like any other day. In a smaller group, 1.2% don’t celebrate because they feel it glorifies the conquest of Native Americans; however, 24.1% choose to celebrate a traditional Thanksgiving out of gratitude.

Here are the top stories today in Long Beach:

1) A 15-year-old boy committed suicide on the campus of California State University, Long Beach (CSULB). University police found the body on Wednesday “on campus near the Palo Verde North parking structure.” Neighbors discussing the sad news on Nextdoor believe that the child was a student at McBride High School. (Daily49er, Nextdoor)

2) Where will the city provide a temporary winter shelter for the homeless? We learned on Friday that locations previously used, “the former North Long Beach Library location on Orange Avenue” and “an industrial building on Hayes Street” are no longer available. In the meantime, the former Best Western, which is now a Project Homekey site, is at 99% capacity. Until a site becomes available, those in need can take advantage of emergency motel vouchers; however, they only become available “under certain conditions, such as more than an inch of rain predicted in a 24-hour period.” According to the city manager, officials are working to find a location and open it in the middle of December. (Long Beach Post)

3) Breeze Airways, which intended to begin offering flights from Long Beach Airport, lost its slot due to non-use. We learned on Thursday that the airline is on the waiting list for a new slot but declined the most recent opportunity to receive one. The start-up air carrier “will fly to Provo, Utah, and Orlando, Florida, out of Orange County beginning in February” from John Wayne Airport. (Long Beach Business Journal)

4) Retro Row is getting a new restaurant! Alder & Sage will open in December at 366 Cherry Avenue. Developed and owned by the force behind the now-shuttered Portfolio Coffeehouse, we know that the menu will include “coffee-rubbed pork belly hash, Jidori chicken lettuce wraps and an all-new breakfast burrito by chef James Wilschke, who will head up the kitchen during breakfast and lunch services.” Yum! (Long Beach Business Journal)

5) We learned on Thursday that Ian Gilligan, a sophomore at Long Beach State, won the CalHOPE Courage Award for November. In addition to overcoming a harrowing health challenge, he “was named Big West Freshman of the Year.” Right now, he is considered one of the country’s best golfers at the college level and “ranked 21st in the Golfweek/Sagarin rankings heading into the spring.” Congratulations!
