⏰ Daylight Saving Time Poll! πŸ€”
Daylight saving time begins on March 12. According to history, we can thank entomologist George Hudson for coming up with the idea in 1895. Implementation took place in 1918 to save resources and extend the work day during wartime. In 1966, daylight saving time became the law of the land, but states could opt out. So far, only Hawaii and Arizona have done so. Now, dueling studies point to the successes and failures of the practice. Where do you stand on the issue? So far, 61.4% don’t like daylight saving time, while 38.6% do.

πŸ“° Here are the top stories today in Long Beach:

  1. A deadly single-vehicle collision shut down the area near Atlantic Avenue and Roosevelt Road on Saturday just before 5:30 a.m. Reportedly, β€œthe vehicle was traveling southbound on Atlantic Avenue when it left the roadway, collided with a tree.” The driver survived; the passenger, sadly, didn’t. (Long Beach Local News, LBPD)
  2. A 37-year-old Los Angeles resident and a man experiencing homelessness in Long Beach reportedly teamed up on Friday afternoon to steal from the shoe store at 71 Aquarium Way. However, an employee from the store alerted Long Beach Police Department (LBPD) bicycle officers, who gave chase. Officers apprehended the first suspect in the 100 block of West 1st Street and β€œsaw several items of stolen merchandise.” They caught up with the second one near Broadway and Pine Avenue. (LBPD)
  3. Lovers is a novelty store at 441 East Broadway. The owner reported that she was battered on Tuesday when she attempted to stop a theft. A couple came in, shopped, and headed to the register. When it came time to ring up the purchase, the woman ran out. When the owner tried to sprint after her, the man stopped her, leaving her needing β€œstitches in her mouth.” The couple got away. (Long Beach Post)
  4. Because the winter shelter at Community Hospital is consistently at capacity, city leaders went searching for a second location. They found it Friday in the Silverado Park gym. The location will add 84 beds and remain open through May 29. The last time Silverado Park served as a temporary shelter was in 2020. β€œSilverado was a safe and successful site during the peak of the pandemic that offered shelter to many people experiencing homelessness, and I know it will contribute greatly once again as part of our critical emergency response efforts,” Seventh District Councilman Roberto Uranga said. (City of Long Beach)
  5. Do you know that Long Beach Unified School District (LBUSD) middle and high school art students are a highly-talented bunch? See it for yourself! Their best work is now on display at the Alpert Jewish Community Center at 3801 East Willow Street as part of the 38th annual Norman Gottlieb Youth Art Show. The show began Wednesday and will continue through February 28. On February 23, students will be honored during a formal reception and awards ceremony. Besides that, you can head to the Long Beach Museum of Art, starting today, Sunday, to see an exhibition entitled "Action: Art & Activism." That one runs through April 2. (LBUSD)
