First, today's weather:

Partly sunny and pleasant. High: 74 Low: 56.

Here are the top stories today in Long Beach:

  1. LB council members are working on an ordinance that will require residents to separate food and yard waste. These are to be “processed at a separate facility to align with a state law that goes into effect Jan. 1.” However, there’s no infrastructure in place – none – to make this happen. Oh, they knew it was coming. The law was passed in 2016. But once everything is in place, “residential refuse and recycling rates could double.” (LB Post)
  2. The City Council has decided to create a Latino Cultural Center. It will “serve as community hub for local and regional Latino arts, culture and history.” Input will come “from Centro CHA and Lord Cultural Services.” (City of LB)
  3. There’s a GoFundMe page for former Long Beach Vice Mayor/CD9 Council member Val Lerch. His doctors have given him 90 days or fewer to live. Needing in-home hospice, the anticipated cost of $16,000 is more than the family can handle. So far, they’ve raised $8,000. (LBReport)
  4. Right now, the Port of LB consists of “3,520 acres of land and 4,600 acres of water with 10 piers and 80 berths.” Some land, however, is owned by third parties. The port is now working on buying up the land that is owned by private companies. While there are no changes planned right now, port officials consider it “another opportunity for the port authority to have land at our disposal.” (LB Business Journal)
  5. “Together We Make Change” is a project under the supervision of Habitat for Humanity of Greater Los Angeles and the Arts Council for Long Beach. It focuses attention on the Washington neighborhood. Soon, residents will see public art on utility boxes. The previously gray or green boxes now receive colorful images. See them on Pacific Avenue and 14th Street, and Anaheim Street and Pine Avenue, Cedar Avenue, and Chestnut Avenue. (The HiLo)
