π° Here are the top stories today in Long Beach:
- The Long Beach Fire Department (LBFD) battled a fire at 1420 Cherry Avenue on Tuesday that started just after 10:30 a.m. A multifamily residential structure went up in flames. Neighbors tried to help, with one kicking down the door to fight it but being overwhelmed by the heat. Firefighters arrived and closed traffic on northbound Cherry Avenue at Anaheim Street. No injuries are reported, and investigators are working to determine what caused the blaze. (Long Beach Post)
- Tuesday Morning at 5432 Woodruff Avenue is closing! Although a favorite destination of home goods shoppers looking for that thing you canβt really describe, the location was deemed βunprofitable and underperforming.β The parent company filed for bankruptcy on Valentineβs Day, claiming βexceedingly burdensome debt.β This is not the first time that Tuesday Morning is in bankruptcy court; in May 2020 it filed for Chapter 11 and closed 200 stores. (Patch)
- On Thursday, Los Angeles County Metro will decide whether to create a homeless services hub near the First Street platform. You may remember that some downtown businesses were complaining about the nightly influx of homeless folks after operators forced all riders to disembark at 1 a.m. Statistics show that βon average, there were 39 people experiencing homelessness who were required to leave the trains each night.β If Metro decides to work with the city on the project, it will look for βsurplus landβ owned along the A lineβs route for placement of the facility. (Long Beach Post)
- In March, we get to enjoy Long Beachβs Cambodian Restaurant Week! Attend the kickoff event on March 18 at the Long Beach City College, where youβll find Cambodian vendors as far as the eye can see. The week officially begins March 19 and goes until March 26. This first-ever Cambodian Restaurant Week is a great opportunity to meet the βmoms and pops, the smaller ones, because they donβt get as much exposure as the bigger restaurants.β The growing list of participating eateries include The Noodle Shack and Udom Khmer! (The Hi-Lo)
- If you ever wonder whatβs the big deal with volunteering, check out the Oleander Walk at the Rancho Los Alamitos, as seen on Monday. Tended by the Ranchoβs volunteers, it's a gorgeous walkway that welcomes visitors and showcases the flowers in all their beauty. And yes, the Rancho would love for you to volunteer! (Rancho Los Alamitos)
